How to Determine the Correct EponaShoe Size for your Horse

On a freshly trimmed horse, use a ruler and measure the foot at its widest point to determine the width. Then measure the center of the foot from heel to toe to determine the length. Use our sizing chart to decide which size will best fit your horse.

EponaShoes come in two different shapes. Wide “W” and Narrow “N”. Wide shoes are more round, while narrow shoes are more oval shaped.

If your horse’s measurements do not exactly match one of our sizes, do not worry.

EponaShoes can be nipped, rasped, or grinded up to 1/8” on each side (reducing shoe total width by up to 1/4"). The length of the shoe can be adjusted by taking up to 1/8" off the heel end and up to 1/4" off the toe end. More often than not, no shaping of the shoe is needed at all.

If you have a horse with difficult or different measurements, please call for help determining which size to order.

If you like technical stuff, you can download EponaShoe Fitter, a free software program designed to help you determine the size of your horse’s feet.

To use the EponaShoe Fitter program, you will need a carefully-taken digital photo of the sole of the horse’s foot and you will need to have a scale marker (something of known size - like a ruler) in the image. Then simply put the image on your PC and start up EponaShoe Fitter!

With EponaShoe Fitter, you can try different sizes to see how they would fit on that foot, and exactly where the nail holes would be. Or, just let the program determine what the best size would be for you.

Download EponaShoe Fitter free of charge and get started now!  (Note: 'EponaShoe Fitter' does not yet work for our new small 'Pony Size' shoes.)

How To Apply EponaShoe

Many disciplines benefit from EponaShoes

Recommended Method of Application

Any Farrier can nail on EponaShoes with no special tools required. But, EponaShoes can also be glued or cast on for rehab or therapeutic purposes. Application methods will vary based on farrier styles and the needs of individual horses. We like to glue plus set 2-4 nails (half the nail damage!), and never lose a shoe!

The Epona-Institute recommends the following application method that combines both glue and nails for optimal performance results from the EponaShoe.

1) Trim the hoof as you normally would. (Learn more about "The Epona Trim" at www.Epona-Institute.org)

2) Apply the 2-part silicon based EponaShoe Packing by hand around the frog, to simulate the natural frog support that horses in nature would get from their feet being packed with dirt or mud.  Mother nature intended the hoof and internal structures of the sole be supported in this way.  Applying EponaShoe Packing yields a quick, easy, and cost-effective means of achieving sole support.  To fend off the “yuckies”, we recommend mixing a small amount of EponaShoe Anti-Bacterial / Anti-Fungal granules in with the packing.

3) Flatten the packing completely by allowing the horse to stand on a paper towel for 15-30 seconds.

4A ) Apply the EponaShoe with traditional nails if the hoof has good walls and no special issues, or...

4B) Apply the EponaShoes with EquiBond Fast-Set Glue. This is a well-known two-part methacrylate glue which we have had success with for many years. To maximize longevity of the shoe, use 2-4 strategically placed nails in addition to the glue. Half the nail damage of traditional shoeing methods, and never lose a shoe!

5) Ride your comfortably shod horse!

Alternative Method of Application

EponaShoe can be cast

Casting

For some applications, casting the shoe in place may be the best option. The use of Casting Hooks eliminate the need to have the casting material go underneath the shoe - hence the shoe’s traction is preserved and the casting material is not worn away on the underside of the shoe. EponaShoe’s test horses were able to keep the cast shoes on for a full 6 week shoeing cycle!

You may view / print step by step instructions on casting.
