Pony-Size EponaShoes

New! Pony-Size EponaShoes New!

The EponaShoe is a flexible horseshoe made of modern composite polymers. It makes use of multiple types of polymer to create the most effective flexible shoe design ever.

Smaller 'Pony Sizes' have recently been added to our offerings after many people called or e-mailed requesting shoes for baby horses, miniature horses, donkeys, and even zebras! Our smallest shoe is now just 2.8" in width and can even be rasped smaller if needed! You can see some photos here.

Besides size, the primary difference between our new pony-sizes and our standard shoes is that the small pony-sizes do not have pre-formed nail holes. This is because they will often be glued, although nailing is still possible by using small nails and creating your own nail holes with a drill.

Glued or Nailed

The EponaShoe materials have also been designed to accept adhesives - either acrylic or polyurethane based - to glue the shoe to the hoof. In the case of our Pony-Size shoes, gluing is a good option, as it is difficult to find small nails, and difficult to nail them into tiny feet! We have some suggestions on how to nail or glue EponaShoes at our Hints-for-Farriers page.

Frog Support

More and more people are discovering the benefits of supporting the frog and sole in some way. Since animals in nature often have their feet packed with dirt or mud, it is likely that the hoof and internal structures are really meant to be supported in this way, at least some percentage of the time. Our recommended method of applying the EponaShoe employs a small amount of 2-part silicon support material placed by hand around the frog, and then the EponaShoe is applied over this packing. This yields a quick, easy, and cost-effective means of achieving sole support. No messy liquid fillers, expensive application guns, and cure-time as required by other packing schemes. What Problems can it Help?

We believe that flexible shoes can help most lameness issues to some extent. Of course, a good farrier is more important than the best shoe, and success is going to depend on doing what's right for the horse -- be it our shoe or not. More comments on problems that the EponaShoe can help with.

How are they Applied?

To fit the shoe to the horse's foot the shoe is shaped with a simple hand-grinder or bench-mounted grinder. Hence, you want to order the size that is equal to, or slightly larger than the size of the trimmed hoof.

For these small sizes, our shoes do not have pre-formed nail holes. On small feet, application by glueing is a good way to go. However, you can also make your own nail holes and use tiny nails, if you wish.

Sizes

The Pony-Sizes of EponaShoe are 40, 50, 60, and 70. The bigger the size number, the smaller the shoe (70 is the smallest). Click here to see our sizing chart.

How much do they Cost?

Pony sizes range from $15 to $16.50 for a pair. Benefits to the health, comfort, and performance of the horse make them well worth the price. Since they have a "built-in pad", if they are used as part of a frog-support approach to shoeing, they more than pay for themselves in money saved on expensive urethane packings.
